The ski area
The Italian side of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise covers Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche: 157 km of slopes with 39 km of blue, 107 km of red and 12 km of black runs, served by 19 lifts. The lowest lift station is Valtournenche at 1,524 m, the village itself sits at around 2,050 m and the top of the Plateau Rosa is at 3,480 m. The season is one of the longest in the Alps, from 24 October 2026 to 2 May 2027.
The terrain is famous for its width: broad, sweeping reds that drop over 1,000 m from the glacier to the village, with blues for most of the way. Cross the Plateau Rosa and you are in Zermatt; the international pass gives 360 km and 52 lifts across both countries.
Who is Cervinia for?
Cervinia is a cruiser’s paradise. Intermediates and confident beginners can spend a week on long, uncrowded reds and blues with the Matterhorn in view. Families like the reliable snow and the Italian prices on the mountain. Experts will find the Italian side too tame and should budget for the Zermatt extension. The village is lively enough in the evening, with plenty of restaurants and bars, but it is no beauty.
Practical
From Belgium it is about 930 km and 9.5 hours, via Switzerland or the Mont Blanc tunnel, then the Aosta valley and the climb from Châtillon. Turin airport is about 120 km away. Because the whole area lies above the tree line, bad weather can shut the upper lifts; a day in Zermatt’s forests or Valtournenche is the usual plan B.
